DOWAGIAC — The City of Dowagiac will be putting the city’s marijuana tax revenue to use with its latest project.

The council voted unanimously Monday to construct an ADA-accessible walking path in Russom Park and awarded the bid for the Russom Park walking path to TBD Construction in the amount of $24,420, contingent upon a contribution from Silver Creek Township.

During a recent workshop, the city council discussed using the money received for adult use marijuana toward projects that would create a “wow” impact on the community. One of the projects discussed was to add an ADA-accessible walkway through the ball fields at Russom Park. This project would open up opportunities for the leagues to apply for grant funds for further renovations to the park.

The project would include the installation of asphalt along a proposed walkway approximately 900 feet in length that would connect the southern parking area to the northing parking area to provide enhanced, ADA-accessible access to the baseball fields located at the park.

In other business, council authorized a Professional Services Proposal with Prein & Newhof for construction engineering of the Drinking Water State Revolving Fund projects. Those projects include a new Water Treatment Plant, replacement of approximately 200 lead service lines, installation of 2,200 feet of water main in the area of Maple Street and Walnut Street, and the rehabilitation of the 920,000 gallon Riverside Standpipe storage tank. Those projects are out for bid and closing on the loan is planned for Aug. 28.

Prien & Newhof has been the design engineer and the city chose it for construction engineering because of its ability to meet timelines and continually communicate with city staff. The anticipated cost of all four projects is $914,000.

In further business, the council approved a proposal from Valley City Sign in the amount of $30,382 for restoration work at the Lyons Health Center. The sign was built in 2007 and city staff believe it needed to be refurbished.
